KEIICHI TANAAMI RETROSPECTIVE
Japan 1975-2009 | Presented in Association with Angura! and Plastic Paper: Winnipeg's Festival of Animated, Illustrated + Puppet Film
Saturday May 21
Keiichi Tanaami, born in 1936 in Tokyo, is one of the leading pop artists of
postwar Japan, and has been active as multi-genre artist since the 60s as a
graphic designer, illustrator, video artist and fine artist. Psychedelic,
avant-garde, alluring and outrageous elements permeate Tanaami's pieces, many
of which have been the source of acclaim in films, art books, album covers and
posters. In 1968 he traveled to the USA to work at Warhol’s Factory. Later he
moved to San Francisco, where he got involved with the psychedelic movement,
and in 1975 became the first Art Director of the Japanese Playboy
magazine. This animation retrospective features his most weird and psychotropic work and is an absolute must for any fan of avant garde animation!
