A year after his mother passes away, James Duke contemplates doing the one thing she had always forbidden him to do; contact her parents. With temptation too great, the young man visits his grandparents and discovers that although friendly, they are very nervous about his surprise visit.

 

Deciding to stay on for a few days at their eerie run down secluded farmhouse, he gradually uncovers an unspeakably shameful part of his family history that his mother had never revealed. Carefully watched by menacing townspeople, he digs dangerously deep to uncover clues to his disturbing past; old gramophone recordings, disturbing b&w photos, animal (human?) remains and a very unusual patchwork quilt made by tortured hands. Ultimately, he confronts both conspiracy and the heavy burden of truth through his discovery of ghosts from the past.

 

In 2006 Fantasia premiered this supernatural thriller as a work-in-progress. It was one of the big surprises that year as the audience gave it a great reception.

 

The process began in 2002 when director Philippe Spurrell saw an unusual CBC television report hosted by Gregory Charles. This shocking yet hidden part of Quebec history inspired the writer-director to create a 95 minute feature shot on 35mm film in the region of Lacolle Quebec. The result is a beautifully filmed work containing a powerful soundtrack and a surprise ending that will leave audiences here stunned by an unexpected part of our heritage.

 

The film was executive produced by Philippe Chabot who, along with actor David Lahaye, runs AVIVA Communications based in Montreal. Music is by David Kristian, responsible for the soundtracks of many genre features in the including LA BELLE BETE, THE ABANDONED and SISTERS. Effects make up was done by CJ Goldman (300, DAWN OF THE DEAD 2004, AURORE) and earned him a Jutra nomination. Director Philippe Spurrell will be present.

Un an après le décès de sa mère, James Duke est tenté de faire ce qu'elle lui a toujours interdit; contacter ses parents. La tentation étant trop forte, le jeune homme visite ses grands-parents et découvre que malgré leur amabilité, ils semblent nerveux de sa visite surprise. Décidant de rester pour quelques jours sur leur sinistre ferme décrépie et reculée, il découvre graduellement une partie honteuse et innommable de l'histoire familiale, ce que sa mère refusait de lui révéler. Surveillé par des habitants menaçants, James creuse profondément vers le danger pour découvrir des indices sur un passé troublant ; vieux enregistrements pour gramophone, dérangeantes photos anciennes, ossements d'animaux (humains?) et une étrange et inhabituelle courtepointe. Ultimement, il confronte à la fois la conspiration et le lourd fardeau de la vérité à travers sa découverte des spectres du passé.

 

En 2006 Fantasia a présenter en première mondiale ce «thriller» surnaturel dans une version avec trame sonore et montage temporaire. C'était une des grandes surprises du festival. La réaction de la foule a était très impressionnante.

Le projet débuta en 2002 lorsque Philippe Spurrell vit un reportage inhabituel animé par Grégory Charles,  à Radio-Canada. Une partie de notre histoire locale, cachée et choquante, inspira le scénariste-réalisateur à filmer un long-métrage de 95 minutes, tourné en 35mm, dans la région de Lacolle.  Le résultat donne un oeuvre avec une photographie magnifique, une trame sonore bouleversante et une conclusion qui  surprendra le spectateur qui ne s'attend pas à cette partie de notre héritage.

 

Le film a comme producteur exécutif Philippe Chabot, qui, avec David LaHaye, dirige Aviva Communications, compagnie basée à Montréal. La musique est de David Kristian, responsable de la trame sonore de LA BELLE BÊTE, THE ABANDONED et SISTERS. Les effets spéciaux sont de CJ Goldman (300, DAWN OF THE DEAD '04, AURORE.) Nominée pour un Jutra.
